Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

It's been a weird winter here in central Texas. We had a heavier than normal day of snow in January and then an entire week of snow and ice storm.  We called it the "snowpocalypse" of 2021.  The ice storm started on Thursday, Feb 11.  School closed early and sent everyone home when the sleet started and they feared the roads would get bad.  We had school virtual on Friday morning.  Friday and Saturday weren't bad so we went to spend the weekend with mom for my birthday.  Sunday however on the way home the sleet started coming down.  We had to stop multiple times to clean ice off the windshield!  We woke up Monday morning to thick snow and it didn't get above freezing until Thursday afternoon.  In the meantime we got more sleet turning all the snow into solid ice.  It was a sight unlike I had ever seen. Many people in the area were without power and some without water.  Jeremy's office was without power all week, so Jeremy worked as best he could from home and many of the employees went to the Johnstone's house to work.  One of the employees even spent one night with us.  We offered to others, but no one took us up on our offer.  The kids were off from school ALL week!  It was a nice break from routine.

Slowing down a little brings a little bit of perspective.  After hearing stories of how everyone spent their weeks and dealt with hardships and helped their neighbors, it made me reflect on life here at the Thompson house.  To put it mildly, I get a little tied up in the day-to-day stuff and I forget to look around.  I desire for our family to get a little more involved in helping others, to look at the world around us and find a way to make it a little better.

Scripture tells us that Jesus "did not come to be served, but to serve" (Matthew 20:28), and we are to do the same.  We are called to love one another, to make disciples, and be His witnesses to the ends of the earth.  Peter tells us that “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”  (1 Peter 4:10)  My difficulty is figuring out what my gifts are, what my children's gifts are, and what that looks like for us.

Father, help me to "be still and know that you are God", reveal to me the gifts that you have given me, and show me how best to use them to serve those around me.
